About Betpak-Dala
A desert plateau in south central Kazakhstan, also called the Northern Hunger Steppe. Lies between the Sarysu and Chu rivers and Lake Balkhash. Summers are hot and winters bitterly cold. Key calving grounds for saiga antelope. In 2015 more than 200,000 saiga died here within weeks from a bacterial infection.
