About Lencois Maranhenses
White sand dunes stretching inland from the Atlantic coast of northeastern Brazil. Not a true desert, since it receives heavy seasonal rain. Rainwater collects between the dunes and forms thousands of blue and green lagoons, fullest from about June to September. A national park since 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2024.
