About Oleshky Sands
One of the largest sandy areas in Europe, on the left bank of the lower Dnieper. Ancient river sands were exposed by overgrazing in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Soviet times part of it served as a military bombing range. Pine plantations were planted to hold the dunes. The area has been under Russian occupation since 2022.
